Industrial Health

Industrial Health is a branch of public health concerned with the well-being and health of workers. Its aims are to remove hazards and minimize the industrial fatigue in the workplace. The health concerns connected with the workplace, such as exposure to asbestos, mining and milling dusts, and metaland acid vapours, lighting, and ergonomic factors. Industrial health aims to promote and maintain the highest degree of mental, physical and social well-being of workers in all occupations.

Occupational Health and Safety

Occupational health and safety is the science of the recognition, anticipation, evaluation and regulation of hazards rising in or from the workplace environment that could harm the well-being and health of workers, taking into account the possible impact on the surrounding communities and the general environment. The scope of occupational health and safety has grew gradually and constantly in response to social, political, technological and economic changes.

Occupational Hazards

Occupational Hazard is ailment in an occupation that increases the threat of accident, sickness or death. It usually means higher premiums. An injury or ailment resulting from the work one does or from the environment in which one works. The four main types of occupational hazards and diseases are Chemical Hazards, Biological Hazards, Environmental Hazards and Psychological Hazards.

Occupational Disease and Prevention

Occupational Diseases or Work-Related Diseases are ailments of health resulting from conditions related to the workplace. Occupational diseases frequently develop over many months or years, depending on the intensity and surroundings of exposure. Occupational cancer, may result from long-term exposure to different gases, chemicals, fumes, fibres, radiations etc. Occupational diseases often resemble other medical conditions and are regularly ignored or misdiagnosed. The workplace can provide an perfect space and environment to promote good health

Risk Assessment

Risk assessment is the regulation of quantitative or qualitative assessment of risk associated to a well-defined situation and hazard. Quantitative risk assessment needs calculations of two components of risk, the magnitude of the potential loss and the probability that the loss will occur. An acceptable risk is a risk that is tolerated generally because the cost or difficulty of applying an effective counter measure for the related vulnerability goes beyond the expectation of loss. Health risk assessment consists of variations, such as risk as the type and severity of response, with or without a probabilistic context. The agriculture, aerospace, nuclear, rail, military and oil industries have a long history of dealing with risk assessment. Also, food industries, social service, and medical control risks and perform risk assessments on a frequent basis.

Ergonomics

Ergonomics is a scientific discipline that brings together information from other subjects such as engineering and statistics, anatomy and physiology, psychology to ensure that designs match the strengths and capabilities of people and reduce the effects of their limitations. Instead of expecting people to get adjust to a design that forces them to work in an uncomfortable, dangerous or stressful way, ergonomists and human factors specialists try to find how a product, workplace can be designed to suit the people who need to use it.

Epidemiology

Epidemiology is the method used to investigate the causes of health outcomes and diseases in people. Epidemiology is the scientific study of the distribution and determinants of health and disease in specified populations. It is also the application of this study to control the health problems. The purposes of epidemiological study are to determine the causes of disease, to advance and evaluate methods of disease prevention and to aid in planning and evaluating the efficiency of public health programs. Epidemiologists are involved in the study of infectious and non-infectious diseases. In recent years epidemiologists have turned their consideration increasingly toward the study of conditions affected by forces in the physical and social environment.

Occupational Toxicology

Occupational toxicology is application of the methods and principles of toxicology to understand and manage chemical hazards and biological hazards that occurs at work place. The work environment has played a significant role in the occurrence of adverse human health effects due to chemical and biological hazards for centuries. Occupational health specialists, including toxicologists, depend upon human and animal information to define safe exposure levels. If effects detected in workers can be mimicked in a laboratory animal, it becomes possible to investigate the mechanisms that might reasonably be expected to produce such effects. The aim of the occupational toxicologist is to avoid adverse health effects in workers that rise from exposures in their work location

Chemical Toxicology

Toxicology is the study of harmful and poisonous substances. Toxicity testing allows us to detect the toxicity of chemicals we use and provides information about the potency of their effects. Determining whether a chemical can cause allergic reactions, cancer or abnormalities in unborn children is important to human health, and the procedure of discovering this information is known as assessment of hazard. This process is different from assessing risk which determines whether it is likely to actually cause harm in a given situation.

Genetic and Cellular Toxicology

Genetic toxicology deals with the property of chemical agents that damages the genetic material within a cell causing mutations, which may lead to cancer. The significance of genetic toxicology is clearly evident from inheritable diseases such as phenylketonuria, cystic fibrosis, sickle cell anaemia and Tay-Sachs disease. Recent studies in genomic sciences and molecular biology are leading to a far greater understanding of the genetic cause of disease and even directing the way to treatments. To investigate cancer it is necessary to determine the cellular changes that turn a normal cell into a malignant cell that divides uncontrollably and repeatedly. This transformation occur when there is damage genetically or an alteration in the structure of a cell's DNA.

The deliberations of the Conference include new methodologies and future patterns in Industrial Health and Environment. The Conference is an exclusive platform for all the Distinguished Researchers from both Universities and Industries to explore their current research works in the field of Industrial Health and Environment.

Scope & Importance:

The setting up of occupational health care has also expanded from the industrial in-plant clinic to university and community hospital-based clinics, multi-specialty group clinics, occupational medicine clinics, as well as private and government consultants. In many of these settings, the emphasis is on preventive interventions and policies rather than treatment. It is important that the physician be fully informed of all significant occupational and environmental health and safety activities, problems and concerns in order to provide necessary advice to assure a safe and healthy environment. Attention to health and safety is not just about being socially responsible. It also makes good business sense and one should regard it as just as important as the achievement of any other key business objective.

The Occupational Health and Workplace Safety Services industry provides advice and assistance in the form of worksite evaluations, compliance audits, hazard assessments, facility design reviews, indoor air quality evaluations and training programs, which help protect the health and safety of employees in a diverse range of workplaces. Revenue for the Occupational Health and Workplace Safety Services industry has grown strongly over the past five years, rebounding from recessionary lows. As the economy has recovered, increased employment and expanded production in key downstream markets, such as mining and construction, have lifted demand for industry services.

Why UAE?

UAE is the second largest pharmaceutical market in the gulf region. It is the regional leader in the manufacturing of pharmaceutical products and it is likely to grow steadily for some years. The total market value is estimated at US$ 1.8 Billion. Strong government support has resulted in growth of healthcare segment. Previously many of the drugs used to be imported but now due to government support local manufacturing of drugs is promoted. Use of generic drugs is promoted to reduce the healthcare cost. Many multinational companies started their operation in Dubai in order to access the market and develop drugs.

Many of the multinational top pharmaceutical companies have established their regional centers in Dubai so as to cover the entire regional market. Adoption of western culture, increase in population and economic activities and integration with international market has led to many companies coming to this region. Gulf Pharmaceutical industries (Julphar) are the largest and oldest pharmaceutical companies in the market. It distributes its products in the market and is focusing on local production. It has developed alliances with many companies for drug production.
